About us

Fell is an abbreviation of Kvígindisfell which is the name of the small mountain above the residence. Here, people have lived and sailed out to fish ever since the country was first settled. Kvígindisfell is situated on the outer part of the north side of Tálknafjörður in the county of West-Barðaströnd. The house's current owners are four siblings, the descendants of the last farmers who lived off the land.

The siblings' father, Magnús Guðmundsson (1931-2016) was one of seventeen siblings all born at Fell in the years 1917-1943. His wife and the owners' mother, Halldóra Bjarnadóttir (1935- 2012), had relatives in Bíldudalur and, together the husband and wife, were sheep farmers at Fell for over fifty years. Today, the land is mainly used for forestry and not farming. An extensive forest now covers a large part of the old hayfields and lends the environment a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The owners of Fell are:
Aðalsteinn Magnússon
Bjarni Magnússon
Hugrún Magnúsdóttir
Lilja Magnúsdóttir

Art Residency

Sheep farming ended on the estate in 1999 and forestry began in the year 2000. In 2016, the siblings founded an association to manage the estate and decided to establish a residency for artists, scholars and scientists.

The old house, built in the 1930s, was renovated and now contains four bedrooms and a small study. A new extension to the house was built, containing a kitchen, dining room and living room with a unique view of the fjord and the bay of Patreksfjörður. Between the old and new houses is a connecting annex with a front hall, restrooms, a bath, laundry and storage room.

From the east side of the house you can walk out onto a large porch, either from the kitchen or the bathroom. During the summer, the sun shines on the porch from morning and well into the afternoon. The porch contains a hot tub and grilling facilities.

West of the house is a concrete pavement from which the evening sun and sunset can be enjoyed, accessible both through the front hall and living room. In the winter, there is no sun in Fell for two months. North of the house are parking spaces where it is possible to charge electric cars.

Big and spacious outhouses stand on a hill west of the house, where in the coming years we aim to create facilities for visual artists and musicians. A footpath lies between the outhouses and the residence.

The internet connection in Fell is very good, but mobile reception is only available outside at the moment. A landline is available.

The houses have electric heating, but the floors of the newer building are heated geothermally through a borehole on the land which supplies 30°C water.

All construction work on the houses was conducted in the years 2020-2022.
